What is Format-Preserving Encryption (FPE)?

A type of encryption where the output ciphertext retains the exact format and length of the plaintext input. This allows encrypted data, such as credit card numbers or social security numbers, to be processed and stored in legacy systems or masked in logs without breaking database schema constraints. It is widely used when migrating applications that lack native support for arbitrary ciphertext lengths.
